A teaser from an informal photoshoot with Desmond and Karen, which turned out to be a marriage proposal, secretly planned by Desmond, with flowers, balloons, vow on a scroll and of course the most important thing - a BIG diamond ring! How sweet!!

Since this was the first time i encountered a proposal in the midst of a shoot, i could not helped but felt excited for them the day before. My privilege to witness their special moment!

Jean is cousin of LENA, my ex-boss who has been very supportive of my business all these while. I am totally grateful of what she has done for me. Why? Bcos, she was the one that opened my door to the world of internet design. She must had taken a great risk of employing a person of no experience, training me from ground zero and giving me the opportunity to grow and excel.

That period was indeed very tough for me, thrown into a strange land and had to face demanding mentors. But that was the moment i learnt the MOST, in the shortest possible time. I worked in the day and learnt at night. Haven't had that kind of learning speed since then, losing the stamina............

Even after leaving my job, she has been giving me many business opportunities. I always like to work with her, cos she is one client/boss that would let you have free play and most receptive in accepting your ideas.

Thanks LENA, thanks for being a great friend and wonderful guardian in my career path!

A 10th annversary wedding shoot for Petula and Lipton. Have known Petula through one of my uni mates from Sheares' Hall, some good old days where i have spent, 3 years of university life.

She was in Singapore from Hong Kong recently and decided to celebrate her 10th wedding annvesary by having a family portrait, in her wedding gown. Cant really tell she's a mother of 2 pretty girls!!

We have a wonderful time on the beach, though i was rather worried they could not take Singapore's heat. But it all turned out well.

Honouring the Caregivers

Some portraits done for awardees of the 1st Singapore National Caregivers Conference, organised by AWWA, a welfare organisation in Singapore helping families with special needs.

This is one event that I benefited alot. From understanding the selfless love and dedication of the caregivers; hearing recounts of one's experience spending reminding times with love ones; to ways of dealing with stress of every day lives.

Caregiving is a very demanding job, the toll could be both physically and mentally strenous. But it taught me that where there is love, one feels no sacrifice. Where there is love, things become effortless. It exhibits the highest forms of love. I salute the caregivers.

When i am surfing the Internet, especially on photography forum, i always come across endless debate on camera brands..... Canon is better than Nikon, or Nikon is better than Canon........blah blah blah....... Just find it very amusing, somewhat silly.

Honestly, I dun really care about brand. I am a Canon user simply bcos my first camera was a Canon EOS 300. A film camera that i still keep till now. Is Canon a good brand? One may ask me. Sure it is, I stand by it, it delivers the quality that i need.

I enjoy digital photography alot, cos i can control the end results, color, BNW, duotone, overexposed, underexposed..limitless creativity. The darkroom process is basically in my hands. I don't have to rely any photo labs to develop my negatives, to produce the "look" that i desire. I love the freedom and control i have.

In reality, there's no perfect camera, as technology is advancing so fast. Few years back, i could visibly see the grains on a photo taken with ISO 800 on a Canon 1Ds. Now, i can confidently shoot a wedding banquet under dim lighting conditions with ISO 1600 on a 5DM2. The photo prints are amazing! Even when i blow them up to large prints; the grains are visually invisible. Technology has indeed made photography alot easier. Maybe one day, the ISO level may even allow us to shoot under the most demanding artificial lighting conditions; with no white balance issues, no more on-camera FLASH???!!!!! Camera that functions just like our eyes????!!!! Till that day comes, i guess there's no PERFECT camera.

One may claim a certain brand is better in the noise control, focusing, blah, blah, blah, maybe to justify for their choice made for THE expensive purchase; to make them feel wiser? But few months down the road, another competitor would come up with a newer version that's more superior. The race is never ending. If you have the money, just go the lastest version. It should satisfy your crave for the BEST.

To me, the camera is just a tool for expressing oneself. The most important thing should be the photos one can produce – ignore the endless and mostly pointless equipment arguments. It's a complete waste of time!

Enjoyed their wedding alot, especially the banquet at Four Seasons. Shot 3 back-to-back weddings this month at the same venue, same ballroom. Last one will be tomorrow. What a co-incident!

Brian must be one very caring and attentive boyfriend, now husband to Jocelyn. This was one of the many initimate moments of Brian attending to his lovely wife.

A recent wedding shoot for Philip and Phyllis. Din intentionally shot in black and white. But while i was processing their photos, i found i like the BNW treatment better. Somehow it brought out the mood and the ambience of this wedding.

Like the contrasting expressions between the bride's parents. Daddy getting a little emotional when Phyllis was delivering her thank you speech at the church. I guess she must be a daddy's girl.

Well, the idea sounded great, but it posted a big challenge for me. My studio nearly exploded with their family members, almost 30 of them??!!!! It was a very heart warming affair though, to see such a cohesive family, laughing and having fun together!!!

I have witnessed Doreen's transformation from a lady ( they have engaged me as their wedding photographer) to a woman ( took her maternity photos few months back) and now a mother. Really feel honoured to share her joy and to see the "achievements" she has made.

Well, i am rather impressed by how fast she slims down though. She's now back to her pre-pregnant stage, like after 3 months!

That's one thing that is the most fulfilling as a photographer, witnessing and experiencing the wonders of life!!!

Here's Kang Hai and Choon Yin second child. A very alert baby boy, he actually followed my camera when i was busy clicking away with the shutter. Amazing, cos he's only 3 weeks old. Should be a smart boy when he grows up, just like his parents.

Just attended Colin and Aileen's church wedding this afternoon. Din really shoot much today as i was there as a guest. But brought my camera along and took some photos( Occupational Hazzard!!!!) . I am glad i took the decision. Colin's wedding was overwhelmed with emotions, his family, as i have known earlier, is very closely knitted. The bride's daddy actually teared quite a little, must be a sensitive new age guy like Colin.

Got to know Colin when i was studying in Toronto. Used to hang out with them almost every weekend when i was there. Freddy, Jean, Darrell, Jenn, the so-called Spadina Gang ( Name after their rented apartment along Spadina Avenue) and many others......... missed those days........they are friends that made my stay there so memorable.

I have developed my utmost respect for this great talent, i salute her!!! Makes me wanna be a better son and treasure the times i have with my aging parents.

The first series were aired during the festive seasons in Malaysia, to foster stronger family ties.

Desmond and Jennifer invited me over to cover their wedding at Kuching, Malaysia. It was my first visit there, very clean and orderly place. In comparison, west malaysia is a little messy to me. I like the place.

Have to blog about the food here!!! I have tasted the best CHAI TAO KUAY there, both white and black!!! The hawker has mastered the skill of frying CHAI TAO KUAY to an ultimate perfection!!!! 想要偷师，却看不出端倪。就是菜头+馃+油+蛋。能把简单的食材，炒得如此香味泗溢，一定是武（食）林高手！佩服！佩服！The taste still lingers in my mouth now.......Any franchise in SINGAPORE soon????!!!!

The photo session was actually done a day after their customary wedding. It's something different, the custom, the people and the makeup artist..........

The BIG Move - A NEW Beginning!!!!

Finally we have shifted to a brand NEW studio at 12A Sago Street. Just next to the Buddhist Temple at Chinatown. Few plus points of my new place. Parking is easier for my clients, there's a big carpark infront of my studio. Food is GOOD, Maxwell, Chinatown market, Amoy and Tanjong Pagar, all within walking distances!!! Yummy!!!! I love my new place!!!!

Moving office can be quite a hassle, packing and unpacking alone took almost a week!!! I am glad i have finally settled down. Time to get into some work and actions now. Will take a few photos of new new place sometime later.

Took some maternity portrait for a couple last weekend at my new studio. I was Doreen and JP's AD photographer 2 years ago. Time passes so fast, they are expecting their first child soon. Congratulations!!!!

While the ceiling at my old studio is higher and the room wider, the new studio offers a longer space for me to shoot. I can really move back to the end of the hall. Control of the lights is better too.

This marks a new beginning for TOPIXSTUDIO and also for JP and Doreen. Let's welcome more good things that are to come!!!

Covered Alan's wedding recently, one of my pals of my uni days.

Alan planned his wedding with military precision. When he shared with me what he would be doing during his big day, i told myself it would definitely be a wedding of many moments and emotions. He was really stressed before hand, but i think it's worth all the effort!!! Congratulations Alan!!!! Enjoy being loved and in love, ever and forever!!!

Alan had a military (SCDF) style march-in, the first one i encountered, and a quartet performing live during the banquet. I love their singing, especially the female singer. She could switch effortlessly between english, mandarin and even cantonese songs. I really like the idea of having live band during the dinner, it's more spontaneous, the atmosphere is different. But more often than not, guests would be so engrossed in their conversation that it has somehow became background music.

Is it the fact that Singaporeans are too shy to applause, or we simply don't really care? Well, some form recognition does make people feel good about themselves ya? So next time, during functions like these, when there's music that makes u feel good, do remember to clap your hands ok?

It was the Frog Prince and Princess wedding.

Stephen and Karen wedding was very well organised and carefully planned. Bravo to them!!!

Karen, who was so blubbly during the engagement shoot, teared quite a bit during her big day. Especially with the embrace of her doting daddy. I guess parting with her parents and sisters was a little overwhelming for her. But i got quite a few shots that i like.

Had a chance to take some candid shots of the couple and their "brothers and sisters". The concept is called the Crazy Photo Booth, where guests are encouraged to act silly infront of the camera. Or u may called it a photo guest book. I thought the idea was brilliant, it added quite a lot of fun to the event! I had my fair bit of laughter too!!!

This is one of my favourite weddings to date. John and Cynthia are the nicest people i have taken photos of so far. Alway making sure i am well taken care of.

Well, such friendly and caring gestures certainly spur me on to go the extra mile for them!!! Cos AD wedding photography can be quite tiring, mentally and physically demanding. It really feels good that your clients are appreciative of your hard work.

John and Cynthia have also been very receptive with the suggestions i proposed to them. I had advised them earlier to do away with table to table shots.

I am ok with doing table-to-table shots, i usually go with the wish of my clients. But personally i dun really think those photos mean much, except recording the fact that who were present at the wedding. I would rather like my clients to mingle, chat and even fool around with their guests. It makes the dinner more causal, cosier and fun. I have seen a lot of couples having to rush through the dinner banquet, changing outfits ( 2 or even 3!) and trying to go through the round of photo taking for 20 - 30 tables. Once they have done that, it's time to say bye bye and they have to rush to the door to usher people off.

John and Cynthia opted for the more causal walk-about. I think they had quite a enjoyable time, it gave me lots of opportunity for candid shots that i like too.

A Princess and Her FROG Prince

Just done an engagment shoot with Stephen and Karen.

I always try to get my wedding clients to be involved in the conceptualising process of their photoshoot. My aim is being able get to know them better and to be able reflect a little bit of them in their wedding photos. It can be about their hobbies, their personalities, their favourite dating places, etc. I hope i can "create" photos that they can "FEEL" for and chat about, apart being the usual beautiful bride and handsome groom, in picturesque settings.

And for Karen and Stephen - I guess it's a fairy tale's wedding.

I always will remember the first time i met Karen. In the midst of the discussion, I asked her to envision what her wedding banquet would be like. She told me her dream wedding is to be able to "fly" down the aisle on a magic carpet. I couldn't help but laughed when i heard that. It's definitely a cool idea, but it would be quite difficult to execute.

What's more, when they turned up at my studio for the photo session. Karen and Stephen wore 2 amazingly cute T-shirts. She was the "PRINCESS" and her hubby - the "FROG PRINCE".

Will i be seeing a fairy tale wedding on her big day? Stephen - any idea how to make a carpet fly? I loan u the rag in my studio if you need one.

Myabe bcos their dad and uncle are photographers, they can be quite candid infront of the camera. I had a fun time taking photos of them!

Some clients may have rejected these, cos they might not be looking into the camera, they opened their mouth too wide, their eyes closed, etc. But for me, these would be my "keeper" shots, cos they show their personalities, the relationship, the happy moments and importantly, their "true, genuine" selves. These are shots i always try to achieve.

I had a wonderful time with Shamala's family last weekend. A very closely knitted family, the girls are so beautiful. Especially her 2 daughters, look like Miss India!!!!

I always like to take a family potrait, where everyone comes in black outfits. Colour clothing sometimes can be a little distracting. With a single tone, the photo would focus more on the expressions and bonding of the family members. Few took up the offer though, most chinese dun really fancy the colour. But Shamala was very obliging when i suggested to her. They came all in stylish black; cool, classy and modern.

I always feel i am very fortunate and grateful to have many wonderful friends that help me along the way, both in my personal life and career path. Kriston is one of them.

Ever since i started my studio, she has been recommending my photography services to her friends. Infact, she and her IJ firends were one of my very first clients. Recently, she recommended my photography service to her cousin, Cynthia, while they were here for holidays.

This little HILO is such a amazing boy and a great model to shoot. No fuss, no fear, totally at ease in front of the camera. As usual, the photos turn out to be my favourites once again!!!

Here's an engagement shoot i have done for Louis and Joyce. I really enjoy this kind of shoot, cos it's more relax and causal.

I guess it's easier for the couple too. With the bridal gown and suit, it could be very restrictive. And having to walk around in hot and humid singapore, it's definitely not an easy task.

Caught the entire table tennis match on sunday. Well, not as KANG CHIONG as the one on friday. My heart was pounding really hard and fast even though i listened to the telecast via radio. Cant imagine i watched it LIVE!!!

Well, I am contended with the Silver medal. Afterall, it's 48 long years of wait. Congratulations Singapore. Any half day off for celebrations?

Lay Hong Coffee Table Album

Lay Hong has opted for a coffee table album for her family portrait. I do albums for weddings, for family this is the FIRST. Cos most families will just go for canvas print or smaller prints.

Outdoor family portraits give a totally different feel. My clients are more relax and candid. There's more room for creativity too, in term of poses and compositions. The only thing beyond my control is the weather. I would advise my clients to do outdoor portraits if they have young kids 2/3 yrs and above. The whole family can have fun while i shoot.

For babies, studio portraits offer a more comfortable and controlled environment. Most babies have short attention span, the most half an hour. Many atimes, you have to wait for them to be fed or take a nap before they are ready for another session. It's always easier for them to take a short nap with the lights off and the cool aircon, in my studio.

The school had been preparing for the official opening of its new campus for a long............. time. Finally the big day came.

Wow, it was like a mini National Day pararde!!! Could feel the festivity mood the moment i stepped into the school. The souvenier magazine was once again quite well received. Hardwork does pay!!!

Here's a set of collaterals for Commonwealth Secondary School official opening ceremony in July. We went through quite a few rounds of design change, finally they settled for this concept.

Just shot an outdoor family portrait for Kylie and Randell at the Singapore Botanical Gardens. We are lucky to be blessed with good weather, a sunny sky and a mild breeze. I was a little worried cos the rain was impending when i woke up this morning.

The girls were a little shy and clinged very much to mummy during the shoot, especially little Shanon. Mummy told me she's not feeling too good, having a running nose....But kids need sometimes to warm up, they have been very good already.

Often i get questions like how long would a photo session last. My shoot would typically last around 1 hour or more, cos we have to wait for the children to settle down and feel at ease with the new environment. Moreover, early shots are usually not ideal, humans are often camera shy and at times nervous. It takes times to losen up.

Here're some shots. Hope to do more outdoor portraits, maybe on the beach. Any takers out there?

These are my buddies from Willow Avenue Secondary School. ( Has been torn by since, sad.....)

We were supposed to meet up during CNY, our annual get-together. But had to reschedule several times due to family commitments. Guess everyone's busy. With their lives, careers, wives, kids, etc. But we made it finally!!!

I have been thinking of taking portraits of my best pals ever since i have a studio. Glad i had the chance to do that! This is how we look in 22 March 2008!

Had been waiting for KHAI and Ayu's AD since the day i shot their pre-wedding photos.

Love the settings, both the hotel they stayed in (NEW MAJESTIC HOTEL) and the venue of the lunch reception (SAM). The rain was threatening, but we managed to keep ourselves dry.
